MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - Freshman Harold Varner fired a one-under 71 during the final round of the VCU Shootout Tuesday and finished at one-under for the tournament as East Carolina finished 11th among the 15-team field. As an individual Varner finished tied for 27th.

Wake Forest (273-269-283=825) claimed the team title, finishing 27-under and 16 strokes ahead of second-place teams Virginia Commonwealth (280-280-281=841) and Augusta State (284-282-275=841). As a team, the Pirates carded a 54-hole total of 867 (296-282-289).

Wichita State's Dustin Garza (66-66-69=201) and Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow (68-64-69=201) finished in a tie for medalist honors at 12-under.

ECU senior Markus Leandersson shot even-par (74-69-73=216) and tied for 33rd, while classmate Andre Thorsen finished at two-over (75-70-73=218) and tied for 41st. Sophomore Warren Straub finished one stroke back of his teammate at three-over (76-71-72=219) and junior Tripp Brizendine carded a nine-over (75-75-75=225).

The Pirates return to competition at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. beginning Oct. 24.
