DULUTH, Ga. - East Carolina senior Harold Varner led from start to finish claiming collegiate individual medalist honors for the second time in his collegiate career, winning the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic on Tuesday at the Berkeley Hills Country Club.

Varner fired an 8-under 208 (71-68-69) to win by one stroke over Chattanooga's Steven Fox (717-71-67=209) and finish two strokes ahead of North Florida's Sean Dale (72-72-66=210) and Chattanooga's Stephen Jaeger (72-68-70=210).

He began the day by shooting par on the front nine before making eagle on No. 10 to drop to 2-under. After a bogey on 13, Varner recorded back-to-back birdies to move to 3-under before closing his round with three consecutive pars.

The Pirates finished third in the final team standings at 6-over 870 (300-285-285), 15 strokes behind tournament champion North Florida at 9-under 855 (289-286-280). Chattanooga finished as the runner-up at 7-under 857 (291-287-279).

ECU junior Matt Kocolowski moved up 10 places in the final standings Tuesday, finishing tied for 13th at 4-over (77-71-72=220). Senior David Watkins moved up eight spots during the final round and tied for 21st at 6-over (78-72-72=222). Sophomore Ryan Eibner tied for 25th at 7-over (76-74-73=223) with Adam Stephenson tying for 29th at 8-over (76-76-72=224).

 

 

The Pirates will resume play on Jan. 30, 2012 as they begin their spring season at the JU Invitational, which will be played on the PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass.
