03/13/2004 HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina men's golf team shot a 36-hole score of 617 (307-310) and currently sits in a tie for eighth place with Old Dominion and Northern Illinois. The tournament is being held at the par-72, 7,013-yard course at the Birkdale Golf Club. ECU (40-48-4) sits 16 strokes out of third place behind UNC Greensboro (304-297=601) and Wofford College (307-294=601). The leaders after the first 36-holes are UNC Wilmington (298-298=596) and fellow Conference USA member Charlotte (297-299=596). The Pirates are one of 15 teams participating in this year's tournament along with: Akron, Belmont Abbey College, Charlotte, Davidson, James Madison, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Old Dominion, UCF, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, and Wofford. Charlotte's Matt Mincer (73-71=144) sits in first place in the individual portion of the tournament, and has a one stroke lead over Wofford's Daniel Sloan (73-72=145) and UNC Greensboro's Andy Bare (71-74=145) heading into the final round on Sunday. Derek Brown (147) of UNC Wilmington is three shots back and VCU's Jend Fahrbring (148) is in fifth. The Pirates, who have struggled of late, have three individuals that are within seven strokes of the leaders. Junior Brandon Pace leads the team after firing a one-over par 73 in the second round and currently sits in a tie for 16th with a two round total of 151. Seniors Jason Harris (75-78=153) and Calle Andren (75-79=154) are within striking distance as they six and seven shots off of second place.
