Millican Sits In Second After First Round Of C-USA Golf Championships
04/19/2004 FORT WORTH, TEXAS – East Carolina women's golfer Adrienne Millican posted a three-over 75 at the 2004 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,197-yard Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. She currently sits in second place just two strokes behind the leader. UAB's Brooke Mangan is the individual leader after firing a one-over par 73 on the first day of the three-day tournament. TCU's Brooke Tull, USF's Daniella Ronderos, and Tulane's Liliana Alvarez are tied for third place, each carding a 77 in the opening round. The Green Wave's Mary Ellen Jacobs finished alone in sixth place with a 78, while five players are tied for seventh place at 79. Fellow Lady Pirates Margaret Mitchell (84) and Jessica Hauser (85) sit in a tie for 20th and 22nd respectively, while Heidi Helliesen and Jessica Krasny are tied for 30th after posting a first round 86. In the team portion of the tournament, ECU (88-42-1) sit in sixth place after a first round 330, just five strokes out of third place. USF and Tulane are tied for the team lead with 318 (+30), seven strokes ahead of host TCU in third place. Southern Miss is in fourth place (326) followed by UAB (328), ECU (330), Louisville (338), Memphis (344) and Cincinnati (367) in spots five through nine in the team competition. "We struggled a bit as a team today," said ECU head golf coach Kevin Williams. "This by far has been the hardest golf course we have played this year. It was brutal and the greens were extremely fast. As a team, we need to step things up. We can't continue to ride the play of Adrienne. We need others to step up. The good news is that we are only five strokes out of third, so there is still a lot of golf to be played." The second round gets underway at 9 a.m. (ET).
