Pirates In Eighth After 36 Holes At The C-USA Men's Golf Championships

    Dade City, Fla. -- The East Carolina men's golf team posted a second round score of 298 and currently sit in eighth place with 18 holes remaining at the 2004 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,153-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Florida.

    ECU (62-78-5) got solid play from senior Calle Andren and junior Adam Howell, who both posted one-over par 73's to keep the Pirates within striking distance of the leaders. Andren (151) and Powell (151) are tied for 29th place, while Robin Smith (150) is sits in a tie for 23rd after a second round three-over par 75, and teammates Ryan Leveque (154) and Jason Harris (155) are tied for 43rd and 49th respectively.

    Evan Frederick of Saint Louis shot a five-under, 67, to top all second day scores. Two other players, Tyler Lefler of Charlotte and Brett Jones of Louisville, fired four-under 68's, while TCU's Adam Meyer continues to hold the number one overall ranking after shooting a three-under, 69 on Tuesday, giving him a two-day total of seven-under, 137. Meyer is the only player to shoot under par during the first two days of the tournament as he continues to hold the top spot on the individual leader board, seven shots ahead of the rest of the field.

    With Meyer's consistent shooting, TCU continues to hold to its overall lead with a two-day total of 572, now 15 strokes ahead of second place Charlotte. Two Horned Frogs are currently tied for third. David Schultz fired an even, 72 on day two for a total of 145, while Colby Beckstrom's 76 on Tuesday also has him at 145.

    Helped by a pair of Eagles, Ray Sheedy's two-under, 70 on Tuesday has helped the 49ers move up from yesterday's fifth place showing. Matt Mincer reached par with a 72, while Scott McNeil fell from Monday's third place showing with a 76 on Tuesday, but all three are ranked in the top 12 on the overall leader board.

    Southern Miss sits alone in third place with a two-day total of 591 after shaving five strokes off its Monday performance. Ben Snow fired a one-under, 71 on Tuesday to move into a tie for 10th place individually at 147, while teammate Justin Elliott is just ahead of him with a two-day total of 146.

    Frederick's 67 represented a 16-stroke improvement over his opening day 83. He was one of four Billikens that lowered their score on day two, including David Perritt, who shot 71 after an 82 on Monday. As a team, SLU improved by 26 strokes during Tuesday's play, moving up to 11th place.

    UAB sits in fourth place at 594, just ahead of USF at 597. Nathan Turner was the top shooting Blazer on day two, firing an even, 72 to move into 10th place in the overall standings with a 147. Oscar Fraustro led all Bulls on Tuesday with a 74, giving him a two-day total of 149, one stroke behind teammate Brad Quiri, among others. Tulane (601), Louisville (602), East Carolina (603), Houston (604) and Marquette (605), respectively, hold down spots 6-10 in the tourney, while Saint Louis (608), Memphis (609), Cincinnati (628) and DePaul (640) stand in spots 11-14.

    On the individual board, TCU's Meyer holds a seven stroke lead over Tulane's Michael Thompson who is an even 144 after two rounds. Louisville's Brett Jones, TCU's Schultz and Beckstrom, along with Alan Weant of Memphis are each tied for third place with one-over totals of 145.

    The final round of play begins at 7:45 a.m. EST on Wednesday.
