Mitchell Climbs Into Tie for First at C-USA Golf Championship
04/22/2003 Dade City, Fla. - The East Carolina University men's and women's golf teams completed the second round of the Conference USA Championship today at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. The men moved up one spot to a three-way tie for seventh place and the women are holding strong in third place. The ECU men are tied with Charlotte and South Florida for seventh place with a score of 594. The men shot 297 in both rounds one and two, while Charlotte, the leader after round one at 285, shot a 309 in the second day of play. South Florida had first and second round scores of 290 and 304 respectively. Jason Harris leads the men's team, having shot one over par (72) today in round two. He is tied for 10th place with a score of 145. Jonathan Hill is just one stroke behind Harris at 146 and in a tie for 14th place. "We just are not playing with much consistency," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "We played fairly well on the front nine, but on the back side, we were just horrible. At this point, we are just hoping for a top-five finish." On the women's side, the Pirates maintained their third place standing, shooting a 308 for the second straight day. South Florida moved up to take a first place tie with TCU at 610, just six strokes above East Carolina. Margaret Mitchell, tied for 12th after day one, shot herself into a tie for first place along with Jill Crowe of South Florida and Drae Ward of TCU. She has a two-day score of 150 (77-73). Adrienne Millican has the second best score for East Carolina at 153. Heidi Helliesen is in a tie for 19th, while Jessica Krasny and Ashley Leonard are tied for 26th. "I think the score shows how really competitive our girls are," said Williams. "We are only six back of the lead and have a chance to win. The wind was blowing like crazy today on the course, and the girls held their own. I am especially proud of Margaret. She had five birdies today to move up into a tie for first. It will be interesting to see how she handles herself in this situation as she has only been in first place once before." The men and women will conclude the three-day event tomorrow morning beginning at 8 a.m. Dade City, Fla. - The East Carolina University men's and women's golf teams completed the second round of the Conference USA Championship today at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
