July 31, 2013
NORMAN, Okla. - The East Carolina men's golf team has been named an All-Academic Team announced the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Wednesday. The Pirates were one of 79 Division I teams to be recognized and one of only two Conference USA teams on the list.
ECU finished the year with a team GPA of 3.05, marking the fourth time (2009, '10, '12, '13) in the five years of the award that the Pirates have garnered inclusion on the list.
To be honored, a team must achieve at cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher. A total of 143 teams in all divisions, including junior colleges, submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic team recognition. To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
It was not the Pirates' first academic award of the year. Junior Eric Brady received Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar Team honors earlier this summer and named to the 2013 C-USA Men's Golf All-Academic Team, posting a 3.85 GPA as an economics major. He was also a recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal for maintaining a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Five additional players of head coach Press McPhaul's roster were recognized by C-USA for academic achievement. Al Dickens, Jacob Hicks, Jake Keefe, Matthew Kocolowski and Stephen Lavenets all earned a spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll for a GPA of 3.0 or better.
ECU joined Rice as the only C-USA teams on the list. Brown posted the highest overall team GPA for all divisions with a 3.74. DePaul, Harvard, Kennesaw State, Richmond, Stanford, Utah Valley State, Valparaiso, William & Mary and Yale also received President's Special Recognition status for having team GPAs of 3.5 or better.
