GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Both former and current East Carolina men's golfers have been busy on the link this summer. Most notably has been former Pirate Harold Varner who made his PGA TOUR debut at the 113th U.S. Open after he earned an alternate spot at a sectional qualifying tournament in Rockville, Md.
Playing at Merion always presents a challenge, especially with the weather conditions he faced this year, but he represented himself and his alma mater with class. Since missing the cut at the U.S. Open, Varner has posted a pair of top-3 finishes on the eGolf Pro Tour.
Also competing on the eGolf Tour is Frank Adams III, who recorded his first tour win of the season on Aug. 2 with a 12-under 204 at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C. Adam Stephenson, a member of ECU's 2012 NCAA Championship qualifying team, claimed fifth-place in the event and Varner finished in 12th.
Rising seniors Eric Brady and Ryan Eibner each advanced to the quarterfinals of the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh. Eibner defeated his future ECU teammate Wesley Conover in the round of 16, where rising sophomore George Kilgore was also eliminated.
Brady and Eibner also finished second and third, respectively, at the Cardinal Amateur held at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Brady fired a 1-over 211 to earn second-place, while Eibner carded a 2-over 212 to tie for third.
Other individual highlights from the summer included a seventh-place finish by Brady at the 99th Carolinas Amateur Championship, a 12th-place finish at the 49th Toshiba/CBI North Carolina Open at by Kilgore and a fifth-place finish at the 62nd South Carolina Open by rising sophomore Al Dickens.
