Pirate Golfers Hold Second Place Position At Mid Pines
09/09/2002 SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - The East Carolina University men's golf team continues to hold its second place position after the second round of the Mid Pines Intercollegiate. The two-day, three round event featuring 14 teams and 70 players is being held at the Mid Pines 72-par, 6,528-yard Mid Pines Golf Course in Southern Pines, N.C. The Pirates have a combined score of 578 (286-292) after round two of the tournament. The men are just nine strokes off the lead of the University of California, which finished the first two rounds with a score of 569 (282-287). East Carolina's Jonathan Hill, who lead all golfers after round one with a score of 67, now sits in a tie for fifth place with a combined two round score of 142, having shot 75 in round two. Jason Harris also shot under par in round one, and shot one over in the second round of the day. With a score of 144, he is currently tied for tenth place in the tournament. "I am pleased with our second place finish," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "If we play well tomorrow, we will have a good chance to win. We are in the last pairing going into the final round, and so we should be well-rested for the final leg of the tournament. I am a little disappointed in our consistency, we are not playing as well as we have been in practice. Hopefully tomorrow we will be able to play more consistent and pull out a win." The Pirates finished 11th in the Mid Pines Intercollegiate last year. The third round of the tournament will be held tomorrow afternoon, September 10.
