ECU's Howell Is Tied For First At The Mid Pines Intercollegiate

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — East Carolina senior men's golfer Adam Howell currently sits in a tie for first place after 36-holes of the 2004 UNCG/Mid Pines Intercollegiate. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,528-yard Mid Pines golf course in Southern Pines, N.C.

Howell, who recorded a pair of two-under par rounds of 70 for a 36-hole score of 140, is tied with Wichita State's Derek Smith heading into final round action Tuesday morning. Fellow Pirate Philip Reale, II, who is tied for 16th, is in the hunt for the individual championship as he is five strokes off the lead with a two-round score of 145.

ECU (290-291=581) in the team portion of the tournament sits 14 strokes off the lead and is currently tied for fourth place with Conference USA rival Louisville. The leaders after the first 36-holes are Wichita State (287-280=567), N.C. Greensboro (572) and Mercer (579).

The Pirates are one of 17 teams participating in this year's tournament along with: Boston College, Davidson, East Carolina, Elon, Furman, Georgetown, Lamar, Maryland, Louisville, Marshall, Mercer, Old Dominion, Richmond, Wichita State, Virginia Commonwealth, Wofford and UNC Greensboro.

Final round action will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
