IRVING, Texas --- East Carolina sophomore Harold Varner was named Conference USA Men's Golfer-of-the-Week league officials announced Wednesday afternoon. It is the first weekly award of his career.

Varner finished tied for fourth place at the VCU Shootout after recording a 1-over par 217 (72-69-76). It was the first top-five finish of his career and second top-10 finish. The Gastonia, N.C., native led the Pirates to a share of 10th place in a 14-team field.

Varner and the Pirates will return to the links October 19-20 at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate in Savannah, Ga.
