Men's Golf Faces Tough Field At Wolfpack Intercollegiate
Oct. 3, 2010
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team will participate in its third event of the fall Oct. 4-5 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina State University.
The 54-hole tournament will be help at the Wolfpack's home course - the par 72, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course located on N.C. State's Centennial Campus. The tournament will feature 36 holes on the first day and 18 holes on Tuesday. Action begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m., and tee times are scheduled for Tuesday morning.
East Carolina is joined in the 17-team field by Arkansas-Little Rock, Campbell, Duke, Francis Marion, George Mason, Georgia State, Lynn, Maryland, Memphis, Navy, N.C. State, Rhode Island, UNC Wilmington, VCU, Wake Forest and Western Carolina. The field features five teams ranked among Golfweek.com's top 50, including No. 10 Duke, No. 18 N.C. State and No. 23 Wake Forest. ECU finished just five strokes behind Wake forest at last week's VCU Shootout.
The Pirates are coming off a third-place finish at the VCU Shootout last week with Harold Varner (5th), David Watkins (10th) and Warren Straub (14th) all placing among the top 14 in the 78-player field.
Last season the Pirates finished tied for eighth at the 2010 Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate as Varner claimed a 12th-place finish at five-over 218. North Carolina claimed the team title and Duke's Adam Long captured individual medalist honors. Neither UNC nor Long is part of this season's field.
ECU coach Press McPhaul will send the lineup of Varner, Watkins, Straub, Zach Edmondson and Ryan Eibner to the links Monday. Edmondson earned his first individual medalist title Tuesday with a first-place finish at the CenturyLink Intercollegiate in Goldsboro, N.C.
Live scoring for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate will be available through Golfstat.com.
