Pirates Finish 11th at Adam's Cup
10/10/2002 NEWPORT, R.I. - The East Carolina University men's golf team completed play in the Adam's Cup of Newport hosted by the University of Rhode Island, bringing home an 11th place finish. Rounds one and two of the tournament were played at the 6,735-yard, par-70 Newport National Golf Club, while the third and final round was held at the 72-par, 6,903-yard Newport Country Club. Michigan State took home the tournament title, finishing with a score of 873, 17 strokes over par. The Spartans moved up two spots from third place to win the crown. Virginia Tech, which led all teams after round one, finished in fifth place. East Carolina tallied a score of 893, moving up one spot to finish at 11th. "Unfortunately, we had a really bad first round and just dug ourselves into too deep a hole," said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We were able to finish above Virginia and South Florida, and I was happy about that. I still like the way this team looks and I think we will be a solid competitive team this season, but we've just got to get a better focus." Jonathan Hill led the Pirate men finishing in a tie for third place with a score of 214 (71-72-71) at even par. He was the only Pirate player to break into the top-20. "I was really proud of the way Jonathan played," said Williams. "To come up here in cold and windy conditions and finish third against this top notch high caliber competition really says something." Kasper Jorgenson of Georgia State won the individual title. He finished the tournament at 210, four strokes under par. The Pirate men will return to action on October 20-21 when they host the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek in Greenville, N.C.
