ECU's Adam Howell Wins Pirate Fall Intercollegiate
10/19/2004 GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior golfer Adam Howell shot a final round one-under par 71 to take home medallist honors at the 2004 Pirate Fall Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon. It was Howell's first collegiate victory and third top-10 finish of the season. The tournament, co-sponsored by the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express, was being played at the par-72, 7,101-yard Bradford Creek Golf Club. The Pirates (30-36-2) placed five golfers in the top-20, which led to a second place finish with a final score of 873 (293-281-299). Junior Robin Smith, who was playing as an individual, finished in a three-way tie for second place with a score of 212 along with Andrew Turner of Liberty and Rory McCaughna of Gardner-Webb. Fellow Pirate teammates Philip Reale, II finished tied for eighth (216), Ryan Solan finished tied for 10th (217) and David Smith tied for 12th (218). Both Solan and Smith participated in the tournament as individuals. In the team portion of the tournament, Charleston Southern took home the title after firing a two-under par 286 for an eight stroke win over ECU and Elon. Rounding out the top five were Gardner-Webb (877) in fourth and Longwood (880) in fifth. "I am real proud of Adam (Howell) winning this tournament," said head golf coach Kevin Williams. "He has worked really hard for this and to have it happen during his senior year is special. As a team we picked up some big wins. Having the lead coming into today and not playing well was disappointing. Our team is inexperienced and that is hurting us. But after the fall season, this team will have that experience and should make for a good spring season." The men's team will take the next two weeks off before hitting the links on Nov. 1-2 when they travel to Mobile, Ala. to participate in the Fall Beach Classic, which will be hosted by the University of South Alabama.
