Men's Swimming & Diving Complete Nike Cup Competition

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The East Carolina men and women's swimming and diving teams recently concluded competition at the prestigious Nike Cup on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Several swimmers posted their fastest times of the season, while reaching the finals.
The highlight of the meet for ECU came courtesy of freshman Christoph Lubenau, who set the ECU varsity record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 0:48.81 and placed second, 0:00.65 behind the race winner from Virginia Tech. Teammate Matt Donohue recorded his season-best time (0:51.06) in the event en route to finishing ninth.
Lubenau and newcomer Bryan Yasinsac each reached the finals of the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle with their fastest sprint times of the year. The duo along with Greg Neville and Charlie McCanless reached the finals of 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay.
Neville recorded his fastest 100-yard backstroke (0:50.50) and 200-yard backstroke (1:53.88) times of the season in reaching the finals of both events. McCanless qualified for the finals in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke swims with Rob Pearce also reached the final of the 200-yard backstroke and swam his fastest race of the season (2:12.01).
Three ECU swimmers qualified for the finals of the 1650-yard freestyle led by Emre Aydin, who posted his fastest time of the year. John Cameron and Andrew Phelps also reached the finals.
Geoff Handsfield was the lone Pirate to reach the finals of the 200-yard, where he swam a season-fast time of 1:54.37.
On the boards, Ryan Hunt continued to place high scores. Hunt placed second on the three-meter boards with a score of 326.40 and finished fifth on the one-meter boards with a score of 259.75.
East Carolina will resume competition following the Thanksgiving holidays at the U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala., December 1-3.
