ECU Swim Teams Improve Records to 5-1 Against George Washington
11/16/2002 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The East Carolina swimming and diving teams both defeated George Washington on Saturday. The Lady Pirates outscored the Colonials, 140-97, while the men won, 140-81.
The women won eight out of the thirteen events. Four freshman took first place finishes in today`s meet, Holly Williams (Palmyra, N.Y.) in the 500 free (5:05.65) and 200 IM (2:09.15), Adrienne Williams (New Castle, Del.) in the 50 free (24.65), Courtney Kos (Severna Park, Md.) in the 200 free (1:55.97) and Meredith Lindgren (Miford, Conn.) in the 200 breast (2:24.59).
Sophomore Diane Parker (Tucker, Ga.) earned first in the 100 free (53.53). Junior Jennifer Belch (Rosemont, Pa.) took first in the 1000 free (10:36.61). Senior diver Carrie Wright (Lansing, N.Y.) placed first in the one meter dive (244.43)
The men won ten out of the thirteen events, taking first, second and third in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free. Four Juniors earned first place finishes for the Pirates: Matt Walker (Charleston, S.C.) in the 1000 free (9:37.16), Cliff Skudin (Frisco, N.C.) in the 200 free (1:43.82), Matt Wildrick (Woodbury, N.J.) in the 200 back (1:56.06) and Dean Cheek (Essex, England) in the 500 free (4:45.50).
Three sophomores placed first in their respective events for the men, Casey Cronin (East Providence, RI) in the 200 IM (1:56.92) and 100 free (47.72), Kelly Hendrick (Shelby, N.C.) in the 50 free (21.97), Brad Bumgarner (Huntersivlle, N.C.) in the 200 butterfly (1:55.47) and Robbie Derr (Bloomsburg, Pa.) earned first on the one meter board with 155.53.
"We are very pleased with how we swam," said Head Coach Rick Kobe after today`s victory over the Colonials. "We are training very hard and are now looking forward to the upcoming Nike Cup."
The Pirates head to Chapel Hill this week for the Nike Cup, November 21-23.
