FAIRFAX, Va. - The East Carolina men's tennis team opened its spring schedule with a 6-1 win at George Mason Monday. Against the Patriots, ECU posted five singles wins and swept the doubles point.
ECU opens its home slate Friday at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. The squad will host Norfolk State beginning at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Against George Mason, ECU posted a pair of 8-5 wins in doubles competition. Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller defeated Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton with Damien Brenard and John Schmitt besting Jordan Dyke and Chris Borden. The No. 3 doubles tandem of Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek downed Tanner Baine and Taylor Sargeant, 8-6.
The Pirates won five-of-six singles matches, all in straight sets, en route to the team victory. Vliegen defeated Davis, 6-1, 6-2, on court one. Schmitt disposed of Baine by the same score at the No. 3 position as did Roller on court five against Keaton. Brenard and Wolterbeek both needed tie-breaker points in the second set on courts four and six to claim victory.
After winning the opening set, 6-1, Soriano dropped the next two sets 2-6, 5-7 as Dyke won the Patriots' only match.
