GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina University men's tennis team (2-0) netted its second straight 6-1 triumph Friday by defeating Norfolk State (0-2) at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. The Pirates claimed the doubles point and won five singles matches from the Spartans just as they did against George Mason on Monday.
In doubles play, senior John Schmitt and sophomore Damien Brenard teamed up at the No. 2 position, downing Igor Braga and Robin Riethmueller, 8-1. Then, at the No. 3 spot, sophomores Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek clinched the point with an 8-2 victory over Daniel Grauel and Sam Lemberger. With the point decided, the match at the No. 1 position between the ECU duo of Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller and the Spartan team of Dimitry Zyhmantovic and Peter Pello went unfinished.
The Pirates then posted five straight set singles wins to claim the match. Vliegen disposed of Braga at the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 3 spot, Soriano defeated Riethmueller, 6-3 and 6-1. Brenard won a hard-fought match over Pello on court four, 6-3, 7-5. After winning the first set 6-4, Roller blanked Lemberger 6-0 to win at the No. 5 position. Wolterbeek posted the Pirates final win of the match, defeating Grauel, 6-3, 6-2.
Zyhmantovic claimed Norfolk State's lone win by outlasting Schmitt in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Pirates return to action Sunday against Longwood. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
