Pirates Sweep Doubleheader From Kennesaw State and Chowan
Jan. 26, 2014
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team swept both ends of Sunday's doubleheader with a 5-1 win over Kennesaw State in the afternoon and a 6-1 victory over Chowan in the evening at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Pirates (4-1) opened the day by taking the doubles point against Kennesaw State with wins on courts one and two, including a 6-3 victory for the 53rd-ranked doubles team of Colin Roller and Joran Vliegen over Louis Theodor and Simon Pritchard. Damien Brenard and Fredric Lehfeldt clinched the point with a 6-3 win over David Durham and Jorge Wilton.
ECU's veteran lineup that featured two seniors, two juniors, one sophomore and a freshman battled through a tough singles round, winning two matches in straight sets, but needing a third set to achieve victory. Vliegen defeated Pritchard in straight sets at the No. 1 position, but had to win a second set tiebreaker to do so. Lehfeldt and Mario Martinez each won their opening sets, but dropped the second set before claiming wins in the third set tiebreaker. Nicolas Soriano was the only one of the four to complete a straight set sweep without the necessity of a tiebreaker, defeating Theodor at the No. 2 flight 6-4, 6-2.
In the evening match against Chowan, the Pirates used a different lineup against their Division II instate foe. After winning all three doubles matches to claim the first point, ECU posted straight set wins in all five of its singles triumphs, including a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory by Blake Gregory over Ivan Doubograev on court five. Martinez was a 6-1, 6-1 winner on court three and Jared Morris was the victor on court four 6-0, 6-1. Brenard prevailed 6-0, 6-3 on court one and Ross Nigro was a 6-2, 6-2 winner on court six.
The Pirates will return to the courts Sunday, Feb. 2 with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. against Navy followed by a 5 p.m. match with Mount Olive.
