GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team improved to 1-1 on the season as it won its home opener 6-1 Friday night against Norfolk State. The Pirates quickly secured the victory, winning the doubles point and recording three straight-set singles wins to defeat the Spartans.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Joran Vliegen and Nicolas Soriano gave ECU the early advantage as they cruised to an 8-2 win over Ben Marks and Christian Romanzini at the No. 1 position. Dave Masciorini and Niels Cleeren clinched the opening point for ECU with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Igor Braga and Daniel Grauel. In the final doubles match, the Pirate combo of John Schmitt and Mario Martinez topped Kent Austin and Shaheed Mourillon 8-4 at the No. 3 position to complete the sweep.
Cleeren doubled the Pirates' lead early in singles with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Romanzi at No. 3 singles. Martinez and Masciorini the clinched the Pirate victory with straight set wins at flight five and six. Martinez defeated Austin 6-1, 6-2 as Masciorini knocked out Roosevelet Cooper 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Freshman Damien Brenard won after losing the first set to claim a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6) win over Grauel at No. 4. Soriano outlasted Braga at No. 2 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. Marks rallied from a set down to defeat Vliegen at the No. 1 position 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 for the Spartans' lone win.
ECU continues its home stand on Sunday as it plays Kennesaw State beginning at 11 a.m.
