ECU Men's Tennis Wins Second Straight Match

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team picked up its second straight win Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Kennesaw State. With the win, the Pirates improved to 2-1 on the season.
The Pirates won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Joran Vliegen and Nicolas Soriano downed the duo of Alex Toliver and Louis Theodor at the No. 1 position, 8-3. The KSU duo of Simon Janik and Michael Browder outlasted Dave Masciorini and Niels Cleeren at the No. 2 spot, 8-6. In the deciding match, the Pirates' John Schmitt and Mario Martinez needed a third set tie-breaker to defeat Gokalp Ozdemir and Gianni Kubin, 9-8 (5).
ECU then won three of the five completed singles matches, all in straight sets, to seal the victory. Vliegen doubled the Pirates' win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Janik at the No. 2 position. Cleeren then likewise disposed of Kubin at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3.
The Owls then scored their first point as Tolliver survived a rally from Soriano (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) at No. 1 singles. Theodor scored KSU's next point with a 7-6(4) 6-7(3), 6-4 over Schmitt at the No. 3 singles.
Freshman Damien Brenard secured the victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ozedir at No. 5 singles.
