ECU Sweeps Home Matches
Feb. 2, 2011 GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis swept a doubleheader against Mount Olive and Chowan, 7-0 and 7-0 respectively, Tuesday at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Pirates were able to win 17 out of 18 matches on the day, winning all 12 singles matches in straight sets. East Carolina won two of the three doubles matches against Mount Olive to begin the day before sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets. Jaroslav Horvath and Henrik Skalmerud each won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Joran Vliegen dismissed Yoann Pham (6-2, 6-3) at No. 3, John Schmitt defeated Thiago Dualiby at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3) as did Mario Martinez did to A. Mariano at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4). Stian Tvedt didn't lose a game to Diego Sender at No. 6, sweeping the match (6-0, 6-0). Against Chowan, the Pirates went 24-8 in singles play. All six individuals won at least one set 6-0 with Ely Khoury blanking Lamar Williams, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. The doubles match produced the same result with the Pirates winning the doubles point by a three match score of 24-4. In the second match of the day against Chowan, the lineup was shuffled for ECU in singles play as Skalmerud played at the No. 1 spot and defeated Adam Moneypenny in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
Martinez moved up to the No. 2 spot, and defeated Scott Van Eck, 6-0, 6-2. Tvedt moved up to No. 3 and won in straight sets as did David Masciorini at No. 4. Simon Escourrou won his lone singles match of the day at No. 5.
The Pirates will return to action Sunday, Feb. 6 in Washington, D.C. against George Washington.
