Pirate Tennis Captures 5-2 Road Win At Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team used four singles wins and a doubles point to capture a 5-2 non-conference victory over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club. With the win, ECU improves to 4-1 overall, while the Mountaineers drop to 0-1 on the season. East Carolina opened the match by capturing the doubles point as Henrik Skalmerud and partner Stian Tvedt slipped past Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs (9-8) in the number one spot and Bryan Oakley and Stephen Whitwell took the third match (8-5) over Andrew McKinnon and Britton Webb. In singles play, the East Carolina took four matches two in straight sets as Jaroslav Horvath upended Trent Constance (7-5,6-3) at the No. 1 spot and Massimo Mannino recorded a 6-4,6-4 victory over McKinnon at the No.5 position. Whitwell knocked off Phillip Kloc 6-2,4-6,6-3 and John Schmitt handled Alain Humblet 6-7,6-3,6-1. The Mountaineers pair of triumphs came at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions as Jacobs dismissed Skalmerud 6-4, 7-5 and Zeke Sansing used a super tiebreaker to defeat Oakley 4-6,6-3,6-1. The Pirates will return to action Saturday, February 13 when it travels to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on James Madison.
