High Point Hands East Carolina A 5-1 Men's Tennis Loss

HIGH POINT, N.C. - High Point captured four singles matches and picked up the doubles point to record a cold weather-shortened 5-1 non-conference victory over East Carolina Saturday afternoon at the HPU Tennis Complex. The Panthers (1-3) earned their first victory of the season while the Pirates dropped their fifth match in the last six outings to fall to 3-5 overall. Junior Henrique Viana registered the only win for ECU with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Ben Deloume in a No. 2 singles matchup. On the other hand, High Point received victories by Julien Antraygues (6-3, 6-4 over Bryan Oakley), Dave Perren (6-4, 6-4 over Matt Peeler), Henri Mangin (6-4, 6-4 over Brian Walters) and Jim Trussler (4-6, 6-0, 7-5 over Stephen Whitwell) at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 positions to secure the team triumph. High Point used 8-6 and 8-4 wins by tandems Mangin/Jack Notton and Antraygues/Deloume against the Pirates' Aleksey Kochetov/Viana and Oakley/Whitwell at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots, respectively, to open the scoring. The Pirates will close out a stretch of five consecutive road matches against in-state opponents when it travels to Davidson Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. meeting against the Wildcats.
