Men's Tennis Dismisses The Citadel, 5-2
Feb. 25, 2011 GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina used four singles wins, all in straight sets, and the doubles point to post a 5-2 non-conference men's tennis victory over The Citadel at the ECU Tennis Complex on Friday. The win improved the Pirates' record to 7-2 while the Cadets fell to 0-4. East Carolina opened the match by sweeping doubles play and jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen defeated James Atkinson and Dillion Berkabile 8-3 at the No. 1 flight before Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt handed David Orces and Derrick Dickey an 8-6 loss at No. 2 to clinch the tally. The Pirates continued their strong play in the singles competition, winning four of six matches. Horvath rolled past Atkinson (6-1, 6-2) at No. 3 and Vliegen defeated Jeremiah Dye at No. 4 (6-2, 6-0) before John Schmitt and Tvedt added 6-1, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-1 victories over Joshua Cook and Elliot Sperr at No. 5 and 6, respectively. The Cadets pair of triumphs came at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions as Orces dismissed Mannino (2-6, 6-3, 7-5) and Dickey fought past Skalmerud 7-5 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-4. The Pirates will return to the ECU Tennis Complex Saturday when they will face off against Richmond in a match scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
