Memphis Slips Past ECU, 4-3
Feb. 27, 2011 GREENVILLE, N.C. - Memphis used a pivotal doubles point to break a singles draw and capture a 4-3 win over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex in the first Conference USA match of the season for both teams. The setback ended the Pirates' four-match winning streak and dropped their record to 8-3 on the season while No. 53 Memphis improved to 8-2. Memphis' No. 2 flight duo, composed of Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare posted the Tigers' first doubles match victory of the afternoon with an 8-3 decision over the Pirates' Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt. ECU's third-seeded pair of Massimo Mannino and John Schmitt fell to John Taylor and Leon Nasemann (8-3) while the Pirates No. 1 tandem, Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen, was leading 6-4 over David Henry and Jordan Smith when the match was stopped after the Memphis had won the doubles point. In singles play, Mannino knocked off O'Hare 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-6(3) in a No. 1 matchup, Vliegen took care of Johnny Grimal 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot and Schmitt rallied past Henry in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 position. Memphis earned wins at the No. 2 (Salisbury over Horvath 6-3, 2-6, 6-3), No. 3 (Nasemann over Skalmerud 7-6, 6-4) and No. 6 flights (Taylor over Tvedt 6-4, 6-4). The Pirates will take a week off before returning to action March 8 when they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to face Coastal Carolina in a match slated to start at 4 p.m.
