East Carolina Aces Case Western Reserve 6-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad used a doubles sweep and wins in five of six singles matches to hand Division III Case Western Reserve a 6-1 non-conference setback Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center. ECU pushed its spring season record to 10-2 while the CWRU dropped to 4-8. After the Pirates' tandem of Jaroslav Horvath and Stephen Whitwell opened doubles play with an 8-1 defeat of Richard Brunsting and John Smetona at the No. 1 slot, East Carolina clinched the doubles point when Henrik Skalmerud and John Schmitt followed with an 8-1 victory over Kyle Gerber and Nicolas Howe at No. 3. The Spartan’s Rohan Patel and Alex Solove gave the Pirates' No. 2 pair, Massimo Mannino and Bryan Oakley, a battle before falling 8-6. In singles play, ECU would take five of six matches all decided in straight sets. Oakley and Horvath pushed East Carolina's lead to 3-0 with victories at the No. 5 and No. 2 positions, respectively, as Oakley blanked Brunsting (6-0, 6-0) and Horvath rolled past Gerber (6-0, 6-1). Mannino clinched the Pirates' team win by recording a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Sean Carr at the No. 4 flight before Schmitt handed Solove a 6-1, 6-3 loss at No. 6 and Skalmerud posted a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Patel at No. 3. Smetona posted Case Western Reserve’s only triumph of the afternoon by defeating Whitwell in three-sets (4-6, 6-1, 10-8) in the No. 1 singles matchup.
