East Carolina Downs UNC Greensboro 5-2

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina used four singles wins, three coming in convincing fashion, and the doubles point to post a 5-2 non-conference men's tennis victory over UNC Greensboro Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex. The Pirates, who extended their consecutive match win streak to seven straight, improved to 12-6 on the year while the Spartans dropped to 1-12. East Carolina opened the match by sweeping doubles play and capturing the opening point. Bryan Oakley and Stephen Whitwell defeated Andrew Clark and Taylor Befus 8-1 at the No. 3 flight before Jaroslav Horvath and Henrique Viana handed William John and Arsel Kumdereli an 8-3 loss at No. 1 to clinch the tally. The Pirates continued their strong play in the singles competition, winning four of six matches. Whitwell defeated Yaroslav Litus (6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 and Henrik Skalmerud handled John (6-2, 6-3) at No. 4 while Oakley and Matt Peeler added 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 and 6-0, 6-1 victories over Befus and Clark at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. The Spartans' pair of triumphs came at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots as Andrey Bubnov dismissed Viana 6-1, 6-3 and Kumdereli outlasted Aleksey Kochetov 6-4, 7-6 (4). The Pirates will close out their brief two-match homestand Friday when they host Drake in non-conference action beginning at 1 p.m. EAST CAROLINA 5, UNC GREENSBORO 2
