GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped Thursday as it lost 5-2 to UNCG at the River Birch Tennis Center. The Pirates are now 13-5 overall, while the Spartans improved to 8-4.
ECU's Joran Vliegen earned his sixth-striaght dual win on the year and one of two Pirate points today with a 6-1, 6-2 convincing defeat of Ahmet Sarioglu at the No.1 position. Nicolas Soriano picked up his first win over a ranked a opponent, defeating No. 119 Daniel Mack 6-2, 6-2 on court four.
The Pirates' Blake Gregory and Fredric Lehfeldt each lost in three sets. Gregory dropped a 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 decision to Cameron Smith on court five after Lehfeldt fell to Nazhone Wilkins at the No. 6 position 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Spartans' Randly Phillips defeated ECU's Mario Martinez (7-5, 6-3) on court two right before Gatson Murray posted a win over Damien Brenard (7-6, 6-3) on court three.
Soriano teamed with Patriek Wolterbeek to record ECU's lone doubles victory, defeating Wilkins and Jimmy Roueche, 8-6.
The Pirates return to action Sunday, March 23, against Presbyterian at 12 p.m. The match will take place at the River Birch Tennis Center, weather permitting.
