Pirate Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader
March 22, 2009
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad captured its ninth and 10th-straight victories Sunday afternoon, sweeping a split doubleheader with a 4-3 win against the College of Charleston and a 7-0 triumph over Chowan at the ECU Tennis Complex. The pair of wins improved the Pirates' spring dual match record to 14-1 while the Cougars and Hawks dropped to 5-10 and 2-7, respectively. In the opener against the College of Charleston, ECU used a doubles sweep and singles triumphs at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 positions to secure the victory. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead with 8-6, 8-5 and 8-4 tandem wins, Stephen Whitwell tallied the Pirates' second point by dismissing Lukas Koncilia 6-4, 6-3 in a No. 2 matchup. Aleksey Kochetov and Bryan Oakley followed with similar 6-3, 7-5 decisions over Steven Myers and Joe Nicolazzi at the last two slots. Mickael Trintignac rolled past Denis Ermilov 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 before Tom Delme and Mickael Boyer each needed three sets to outlast Jaroslav Horvath (6-7, 6-1, 7-6) and Henrik Skalmerud (7-6, 6-7, 1-0) at No. 1 and No. 4 to account for the Cougars' scoring. Against Chowan in the second match, the Pirates quickly clinched the victory by outscoring the Hawks 24-4 in doubles play and posting 12 straight-set singles wins. Whitwell (No. 1), Ermilov (No. 2), Skalmerud (No. 3), Kochetov (No. 4), David Masciorini (No. 5) and Ryan Daly (No. 6) combined to post a 72-9 ledger to help ECU close out the triumph in convincing fashion.
