Pirate Tennis Falls At UNC Greensboro
March 23, 2011 GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro used four singles wins and the doubles point to secure a 5-2 men's tennis non-conference victory over East Carolina Wednesday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The loss was the second straight for the Pirates, who dropped their record to 10-5. The Spartans, winners of seven in a row and eight of their last nine matches, improved to 11-3 on the season. In singles play, UNCG's Channon Varapongsittikul cruised past ECU senior Henrik Skalmerud 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 slot, while Ahmet Sarioglu posted a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over sophomore John Schmitt at No. 4. Timion Meijs followed by picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 over senior Jaroslav Horvath and Orcun Seyrek rounded out the Spartans' victory total by handing sophomore Massimo Mannino a 6-1, 6-3 setback at No. 1. The Pirates earned wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 slots as freshman Joran Vliegen rolled past Yaroslav Litus 6-4, 6-2 and senior Stian Tvedt outlasted Zach Reece 7-6, 6-4. UNCG opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests with Litus/Jacob Wright and Ahmet Sarioglu/Varapongsittikul recording 9-7 and 8-6 victories over Skalmerud/Tvedt and Nathan Smiley/Mannino in the No. 2 and No. 3 matchups, respectively. The Pirates' No. 1 tandem, consisting of Vliegen and Horvath, tallied an 8-6 triumph over Seyrek and Meijs for ECU's only pairs win.
