Pirate Men's Tennis Moves To 15-1
March 25, 2009
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina extended its regular season match winning streak to 11 straight with a weather-shortened 5-1 non-conference victory over Campbell Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex. The triumph pushed the Pirates' spring record to 15-1 while the Camels dropped to 10-7. After doubles play was cancelled because of deteriorating weather conditions, ECU responded by quickly capturing five of six singles matchups in straight sets to secure the win. Bryan Oakley (11-1) and Aleksey Kochetov (14-1) improved their combined record to 25-2 with 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2 victories over Raul Martinez and Ian Kahler at the No. 6 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Stephen Whitwell followed with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Davy Sum at No. 1 to run his spring dual match slate to 14-2 and give the Pirates a 3-0 edge. Henrik Skalmerud (6-3, 6-3) rolled past Loukas Wallaart at No. 4 and Jaroslav Horvath defeated Lubos Sobotka (6-3, 6-4) in a No. 2 meeting to close out East Carolina's scoring efforts. Campbell used Beto Mondini's 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 decision over Denis Ermilov at No. 3 for its only tally of the afternoon. East Carolina, which suffered its only loss of the season against Appalachian State on Feb. 15, will try to make it 12 in a row Saturday when it travels to Lynchburg, Va. for an 11:00 a.m. match against the Liberty Flames.
