GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina won the doubles point and three singles matches to defeat Richmond, 4-3, at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center late Saturday night. The match was originally scheduled to be played in Richmond, but was moved moved to Greenville because of the threat of severe weather in central Virginia.
Senior Joran Vliegen and freshman Niels Cleeren teamed to defeat Aaron Wicker and Dylan Trent at the No. 1 doubles position, 8-4. John Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek downed Sebastien Fauchett and Pablo Arana, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot to claim the doubles point, before the match at No. 2 was completed.
The Pirates and Spiders split the six singles matches. Vliegen defeated Ethan Dunbar at No. 1 in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), while Damien Brenard and Mario Martinez also won their matches at No. 5 and 6 in straight sets.
ECU will return to action on Friday, March 30 at the Conference USA Shootout in Birmingham, Ala.
