Singles Play Lifts ECU Past UAB, 4-3

NEW ORLEANS, LA. - The East Carolina men’s tennis squad overcame a doubles point loss and rebounded to capture four of six singles matches to post a 4-3 Conference USA victory over UAB Friday morning. The win extended the teams overall record to 17-4, conference record to 2-0 and win streak to five. UAB earned the opening tally when tandems Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman posted a 8-3 triumph over Stian Tvedt and Stephen Whitwell at the No. 3 slot and Alex Emery and Danny Manlow defeated Jaroslav Horvath and Henrik Skalmerud 8-4 at the No.1 flight. The No.2 match went unfinished. In singles, UAB continued its strong play by earning the opening two matches at the No. 3 slot as Zimmerman defeated Massimo Mannino 6-3, 6-0 and Tyrone Ewels dismissed Skalmerud 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. ECU bounced back in singles play to book victories at the No. 6, 1, 4 and 2 slots respectively to secure the win. Bryan Oakley rolled past Dan Cornei 6-1, 6-2, Horvath dispatched Emery 6-4, 6-2, John Schmitt defeated Daniel Moser 6-3, 6-3 and Whitwell claimed the 7-6, 6-2 win over Manlow to take the match. The Pirates will wrap-up tourney play tomorrow with a 9 a.m. match against Southern Miss. EAST CAROLINA 4, UAB 3
