Pirates Drop Second Match Of C-USA Shootout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The East Carolina men's tennis team dropped its second-straight match at the Conference USA Shootout Saturday, falling to Southern Miss 4-1.
Sophomore Joran Vliegen won ECU's lone match of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Matt Frost. Junior John Schmitt and freshman Nicolas Soriano were each in the third set of thier matches when USM's Jovan Zeljkovic took the first set 6-4 then outlasted ECU freshman Damien Brenard in the second set tie-breaker, 7-6 (4) to clinch the match.
The Pirates dropped the first point of the afternoon after the Golden Eagles won two of the three the doubles matches. Southern Miss struck first at the No. 1 spot where the USM duo of Inaki Belloso and Juan Escobar defeated Vliegen and Niels Cleeren (8-4). The Pirates responded at the No. 2 spot which saw Soriano and Brenard down the team of Paulo Alvarado and Michael Elortegui (9-7). The point came down to court three where Andrew Goodwin and Jovan Zeljkovic edged Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek (8-5).
ECU will conclude play at the Conference USA Shootout on Sunday against Tulane.
