RICHMOND, Va. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over Richmond on Wednesday at the Westhampton College Tennis Courts.
The Pirates won the doubles point and split the six singles matches to win the dual. With the victory ECU improves to 15-5 overall, while Richmond falls to 9-11.
In doubles play, ECU was victorious on courts one and two to claim the point before the match on court three was completed. Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller won at No. 1 as they earned an 8-4 win over Ethan and Jacob Dunbar. At No. 2, Mario Martinez and Fredric Lehfeldt defeated Alex Hahn and Canyon Teague, 8-3, before Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek could finish their match at the No. 3 position.
In singles, Damien Brenard rallied from a set down to defeat Dylan Trent at No. 3 in a three-set match 6-7, 6-0, 6-3. Soriano also posted a three-set victory with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Hahn on court four. The Pirates final victory of the match came from the No. 5 position as Lehfeldt defeated Teague in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 1, Vliegen dropped a tough 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 decision to Ethan Dunbar. At No. 2, Martinez fell 6-1, 6-0 to Jacob Dunbar and at No. 6, Roller dropped a tough three-set match against Jonathan Quenard 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The Pirates return to action Saturday, April 5, when they visit UNC Wilmington.
