WILMINGTON, N.C. - East Carolina had its three-match road winning streak snapped on Saturday, as the Pirates were blanked by 69th-ranked UNC Wilmington, 7-0, at the UNCW Courts.
The match opened with UNCW winning the doubles point by taking both completed matches. Mario Martinez and Fredric Lehfeldt fell at the No. 2 position to the 68th-ranked duo of Pedro Mol and Kaue Pereira, 8-2. Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller lost to No. 56 Rafael Aita and Sam Williams, 8-4, on court one.
UNCW then swept all six singles matches. The only match that went to a third set with Lehfeldt taking the first set from Santtu Leskinen at No. 5 singles, 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-3. Leskinen then won the match with a 10-6 victory in the tiebreaker.
One court one, No. 22 Vliegen was beaten by No. 69 Aita as he dropped the first set, 6-3, and before retiring in the second set trailing 4-2.
Also competing for the Pirates were Damien Brenard, who fell to Mol one court two, 6-2, 7-6, and Martinez, who lost at the third spot to Williams 6-2, 6-1. Soriano lost at the fourth spot to Pereira, 6-2, 6-1, while Roller lost to Van der Burgh at the sixth position 6-2, 6-4.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, April 8, as they host Campbell in their final home match of the season beginning at 1 p.m.
