Longwood Turns Back ECU Men's Tennis, 4-3
April 8, 2011 FARMVILLE, Va. --- East Carolina and Longwood split six singles matches but the Lancers swept doubles play by capturing all three pro-sets to hand the Pirates a 4-3 non-conference setback Thursday afternoon at the Lancer Courts. The loss dropped East Carolina to 11-9 on the year while the Lancers improved their dual match record to 6-7. Longwood set the tone early as Marc Ferrigno and Jimmy Davis teamed up for a 9-7 triumph over Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen at the No. 1 position. The Lancers also 8-4 and 8-5 wins by Nobu Tanaka/Crescente Lesser and Milo Barajas-Alexander/Edward Becker over Henrik Skalmerud/Stian Tvedt and Massimo Mannino/Nathaniel Smiley at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead. In singles play, ECU picked up victories at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 slots as Mannino rallied past Ferrigno (4-6, 6-4, 6-3), Tvedt disposed of Davis (7-6, 6-0) and John Schmitt cruised by Barajas-Alexander (6-1, 6-2). The Lancers used a pair of three-set victories to clinch the match as Lesser defeated Vliegen (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 and Edward Becker turned back Skalmerud (6-4, 4-6, 7-6) at No. 6. Tanaka defeated Horvath at No. 1 (6-4, 6-3) to earn a split of the singles matches. East Carolina will return to action Saturday when it hosts Barton in a non-conference meeting beginning at 11 a.m.
