Pirate Men's Tennis Falls to Elon 5-2

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Elon used four singles wins and the doubles point to secure a 5-2 men's tennis non-conference victory over East Carolina and extend its win streak to seven Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The loss was the third straight for the Pirates, who dropped their record to 8-12. The Phoenix, also winners of 11 of their last 12 matches, improved to 17-4 on the season.
In singles play, Elon's Damon Gooch, ranked No. 120 nationally according to the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings as administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, cruised past ECU freshman Aleksey Kochetov 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot, while Sebastian Bredberg posted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over sophomore Ricardo Barone at No. 3. Gustaf Asplund followed by picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 over senior Nick Rose and Kevin Colin rounded out the Phoenix' victory total by handing sophomore Mike Catalano a 6-0, 6-1 setback.
Elon opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests with Bredberg/Colin and Asplund/Dalodom recording 8-6 and 8-3 victories over Rose/Walters and Catalano/Viana in the No. 2 and No. 3 matchups, respectively. The Pirates' No. 1 tandem, consisting of Barone and Kochetov, tallied an 8-6 triumph over Fenn and Gooch for ECU's only pairs win.
The Pirates will conclude regular season play Saturday by hosting South Carolina State in a match scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
