Men's Tennis Knocks Off No. 44 Elon

ELON, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season over a ranked opponent, defeating 44th-ranked Elon, 4-1, Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to earn the program's first-ever win over a top 50 opponent. The Pirates snapped the Phoenix's 12-match unbeaten streak to improve to 17-6 overall, dropping the Southern Conference champion to 16-4.

The Pirates started off strong by winning the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Elon took the first doubles match on court two before Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek defeated Ismael S. Delfin and Dan Sablik, 8-6, to even things up. Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller followed with an 8-6 win over Elon's 35th-ranked tandem of Cameron Silverman and Jordan Kaufman to give ECU the doubles point.

Soriano put East Carolina up 2-0 from the No. 4 position as Brian Kowalski was forced to retire after a 6-4 setback in the first set. Elon's lone point on the day came courtesy of Stefan Fortmann, who won 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles position over Mario Martinez to make the score 2-1.

Damien Brenard followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Robert Lindgren at No. 3 before Vliegen clinched the match with a win over Silverman, who was ranked 35th in the latest ITA Singles Rankings.

After dropping the first set, 6-4, Vliegen bounced back in set number two and posted a 6-2 win. He took that momentum into a 6-2 third set victory which sealed the 4-1 win for the Pirates. Vliegen improved to 8-4 against ranked opponents this season with the three set triumph for his 30th singles win of the year.

 

 

East Carolina will next compete at the Conference USA Championships in Tulsa, Okla., which are set to begin Thursday, April 17.
