Pirates Handle Mount Olive, Sweep N.C. Central

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad posted its first doubleheader sweep since the opening weekend of the season with a 6-1 win over Mount Olive and a 7-0 shutout of North Carolina Central Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
In the opener against the Trojans, ECU clinched the doubles point after 8-1 and 8-2 wins by tandems Matt Peeler/Stephen Whitwell and Sam McSpadden/Bryan Oakley before following by taking five of six singles events to earn the team victory.
Aleksey Kochetov, Whitwell, Peeler, Brian Walters and McSpadden were all victorious in singles play at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Kochetov rolled past Guilherme Serra (6-3, 6-0), Whitwell defeated Richard Maclachlan (6-1, 6-2), Peeler dismissed Frederico Barros (6-2, 6-3), Walters handled Intradeep Mitra (6-1, 6-4) and McSpadden dispatched Bevan Hewett (6-2, 6-1).
Mount Olive (11-12) booked its only victory when Victor Lage outlasted Bryan Oakley 6-3,3-6, 1-0 (6) in a No. 2 matchup.
In the late afternoon tilt against North Carolina Central (10-12), the Pirates claimed six singles matches and three doubles events - winning all of the possible 15 sets in dominating fashion.
After ECU (10-12) posted the doubles tally with consecutive 8-0 triumphs, Oakley and Peeler extended the Pirate lead to 3-0 with a pair of straight-set 6-0, 6-0 wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 slots. At No. 1, Kochetov upended Andres Perez 6-1, 6-0 while Mike Catalano picked up his first victory of the season by handing Joseph Estevez a 6-0, 6-1 setback at No. 5.
The Pirates completed the singles sweep with Whitwell's 6-1, 6-1 rout over Ashley Stout at No. 3, and Greg Simon's initial collegiate dual match win - a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Stephen Allsop at No. 6.
East Carolina will close out its regular season schedule Saturday by hosting Old Dominion beginning at 11:30 a.m.
