Pirates Advance To Semifinals With Win Over Charlotte

TULSA, Okla. --- East Carolina advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 Conference USA Championship with a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over Charlotte Friday afternoon.

The Pirates grabbed a win at No. 1 doubles from Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller, as they topped Kamil Khalil and J. Massalle Ferrer 8-5. Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 decision over Alex Calott and Paul Cisti at No. 3.

Vliegen scored Pirates' first singles win of the day, defeating Forest Edwards in straight sets (6-0, 6-1). Charlotte won the next two matches on courts two and three to tie the match at 2-2. Soriano gave ECU a 3-2 lead as he defeated Calott in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at No. 4.

Lehfeldt closed things out for ECU, taking the No. 5 match in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 7-6) from Jack Williams and pushing the Pirates into the semifinals for the first time.

ECU will play No. 2 seed Tulane Saturday at 1 p.m. EDT.
