Tulsa Shuts Down Pirates Season, 4-0

TULSA, Okla. - Top seed and 36th-ranked Tulsa ended East Carolina's season Friday with a 4-0 victory over the eighth-seeded Pirates in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Golden Hurricane improves to 17-7 on the season and will face No. 5 seed Memphis in the 12 p.m. semifinal match Saturday. ECU concludes its year at 13-11. Tulsa scored first at the No. 1 doubles spot as the 26th-ranked duo of junior Ashley Watling and sophomore Clifford Marsland defeated seniors Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen, 8-3. Sophomore Marcelo Arevalo and freshman Japie De Klerk ended doubles play with an 8-5 win over ECU seniors Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt. The Golden Hurricane wrapped the match up with straight-set wins at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles positions. Off the court first was sophomore Alastair Barnes who swept ECU senior Henrik Skalmerud, 6-1, 6-3, at the bottom slot. Fellow classmate Tristan Jackson scored the third point with a 6-2, 6-4 over Tvedt at the No. 5 position, while 77th-ranked Watling ended the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win against sophomore Massimo Mannino.
