ATHENS, Ga. --- East Carolina University senior Joran Vliegen advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships with an opening round win over No. 61 Florian Lakat of Mississippi State Wednesday. It was the first-ever NCAA Tennis Championship win in school history.
"I am happy to get through the first round," Vliegen said. "The first match is never easy so it was a good way to settle in. I'm excited about the next match and opportunity tomorrow."
Vliegen, the 25th-ranked player in the nation, took an early lead in the match, capturing the first set, 7-5. He then closed out the match with a comfortable 6-2 win in the second set to improve to 10-4 against ranked opponents this season.
"It was a great effort today by Joran," ECU Head Coach Shawn Heinchon said. "He put in a lot of hard work the last couple of weeks and it showed."
Vliegen will face No. 16 Soren Hess-Olesen of Texas in the round of 32 Thursday at 9 a.m.
