09/10/2012
WILMINGTON, N.C. --- East Carolina sophomores Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek each won consolation flights Sunday at the 2012 UNCW/Landfall Invitational held at the Country Club of Landfall Tennis Center. After losing his opening round match to Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez-Villa, Soriano recorded three straight set victories to claim the Flight A singles' consolation championship. Soriano defeated Charlotte's Alex Calott and Old Dominion's Dante Terenzio to reach the championship match, where he beat VCU's Michael Voscek (6-3, 6-2). Wolterbeek survived a grueling three-set consolation semifinal match against Charlotte's Nate Shanok (4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5) to reach the finals of Flight C. After posting a 6-3 win in the opening set, Woltebeek blanked ODU's Alfredo Rodriguez, 6-0, in the second set to claim victory. Freshman Blake Gregory was the only Pirate to advance in the championship bracket, defeating Rodriguez in three sets (7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3) to reach the semifinals, losing to Charlotte's Alex Weber in straight sets. In doubles play, Soriano teamed with fellow sophomore Damien Brenard to reach the finals of Flight A, but were defeated by the ODU duo of Albert Ochagavia and Zvonimir Podvinski, 8-4. The Pirates will host the 2012 ECU Fall Shootout beginning Friday, Sept. 14, at the River Birch Tennis Center. James Madison, Navy and Richmond will join ECU for this year's three-day event.
