ECU Concludes Third Weekend Of Fall Tournament Play

Elon Fall Invitational Results

ELON, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team completed its third weekend of the fall tournament season Sunday, compiling a 14-9 singles record and a 5-5 mark in doubles competition at the Elon Invitational. Junior Mario Martinez and Joran Vliegen each posted a 3-1 singles record with Martinez winning the B2 consolation flight and Vliegen finishing runner-up in the A1 championship flight.

Vliegen won each of his first three matches in straight sets to reach the A1 championship match against Elon's Stefan Fortmann. Fortmann, who also won each of his first three matches in straight sets, defeated Vliegen 6-3, 7-6 (4) to claim the flight.

After suffering an opening round loss to Richmond's Paul Nahon, Martinez won his next two matches in straight sets to reach the finals of the B2 consolation flight against N.C. Wesleyan's Clayton Sonn. Sonn won the opener 6-4, but Martinez rallied for a 6-2 victory in the second set and then won the tiebreaker, 1-0 (8).

Senior John Schmitt posted a 2-1 record and advanced to the semifinals of the A2 singles flight before losing in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (5)) to James Madison's Ryan Pool. Freshman Colin Roller also won two matches after dropping his opening match to reach the B1 consolation finals, where he fell to Longwood's Dan Elston (6-4, 6-1).

ECU's foursome of Damien Brenard, Blake Gregory, Ross Nigro and Patriek Wolterbeek each recorded a 1-1 mark over the weekend.



In doubles play, Roller and Vliegen finished runner-up to UNC Greensboro's team of Jimmy Dougherty and Randy Phillips in the A1 championship flight. Roller and Vliegen won each of their first two matches over teams from Campbell and Elon by the score of 8-4 before losing in the in the finals 8-3.

Martinez and Nigro paired up to win the B2 consolation flight with a 9-8 (1) victory over Elon's Chris Gleason and Robert Lindgreen. The ECU duo also posted a 2-1-tournament ledger.

The Pirates will return to action beginning Oct. 1 at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
