ELON, N.C. --- John Schmitt's Flight A1 consolation title led the charge on the final day of competition for East Carolina at the Elon Fall Invitational on Sunday. The junior finished the tournament 3-1 in singles play.
Schmitt defeated Yusuke Kusuda of Coastal Carolina in the Flight A1 consolation with a hard fought, three-set victory. After dropping the opening set 1-6, Schmitt finished with a 6-3, 12-10 win to earn the consolation title.
The Pirates also claimed a pair of doubles consolation flight titles. Schmitt teamed with Mario Martinez to win the A2 doubles consolation championship with Damien Brenard and David Masciorini winning the B2 doubles consolation flight.
Martinez and Schmitt defeated the NC State duo of Beck Bond/Rafael Paez, 8-5, to advance to the consolation finals and won the flight by default over Elon's Stefan Fortmann and Jordan Kaufman.
Brenard and Masciorini blanked the Longwood's duo of Edward Becker and Steed Johnson, 8-0, and then defeated Elon's combo of Christopher Geaslen and Carlos Arboleda, 8-5. The Pirate duo posted a 3-1 record over the three-day tournament.
In Flight B2 consolation action, Masciorini defeated Becker in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (4), to advance to the consolation semifinals before he was eliminated in straight sets.
ECU will compete in two more fall tournaments, including the ITA Regional event at the University of North Carolina, which begin Thursday.
