Trio Of Pirates Appear In First ITA Rankings

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- After enjoying a historic fall campaign, East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen will begin the 2014 spring season ranked No. 23 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) National Singles Rankings, which is the highest ranking ever for an ECU singles player.

Vliegen, who was No. 87 in the preseason rankings, compiled a 15-2 record during the fall season with a 6-2 mark against ranked opponents. He became the first player in school history to win the ITA Carolina Region Singles Championship and advance to the ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships.

Freshman Miles Holvoet also joins Vliegen among the nation's top 125 individuals, ranking 110th to give the Pirates two players in the national rankings for the first time ever. He posted an unblemished mark of 7-0 during the fall season.

Vliegen and doubles partner Colin Roller are ranked No. 53 in the initial 2014 ITA Doubles Team Rankings. The duo posted a 6-2 record in the fall after collecting a 17-1 mark during the 2013 spring season with an appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championships.

ECU opens the 2014 dual match season Jan. 17 at 43rd-ranked North Carolina.
