Men's Tennis Splits in Doubles Play at Power of One
01/29/2003 GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University's men's tennis team split a dozen doubles matches played over the weekend as part of the annual Power of One Tournament, held at Greenville's Courtside Athletic Club.
The three-day tournament featured nearly 35 top college and pro players from around the state. Other university teams represented were UNC Wilmington and Barton College. The Pirates' top doubles tandem of senior Brad Sullivan and junior Charl Meyer, who ranked 10th in the region this past fall, performed well in winning two of their three matches. Their only loss came in a match decided by tie-breaker to UNCW's Scott Curry and Danilo Mendes. ECU's Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose also went 2-1 on the weekend, as did teammates Edward Cooper and Felipe Fonseca. Cooper and Fonseca posted the Pirates' lone victory over a collegiate duo with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 victory over Barton College's Ewout Hinnen and John Marte'. The tournament was the last tune-up for ECU before spring dual match play begins in earnest. The Pirates will play three team matches on the road this weekend, beginning with a stop at High Point on Friday (1 p.m.). ECU will travel to Clemson, S.C., on Saturday to face the host Tigers at 9 a.m. and a neutral site match-up against Erskine at 2 p.m.
