Men's Tennis Grinds Out 4-3 Win at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- East Carolina ran its record to 2-0 with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Charleston Southern in men's tennis action on Friday.

The Buccaneers took the Pirates to the limit, winning the doubles points and capturing victories at number one and three singles. East Carolina proved strong at the bottom, winning the four, five and six singles, as well as the number two singles.

CSU's Quentin Guichard and Jean De Lange captured the number one doubles match, defeating Charl Meyer and Darren Mansell, 8-4. The number two doubles team from CSU, Lebo Jacobs and Kutlwano Lephuthino, defeated the ECU team of Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose, 9-8. ECU took the number three doubles, 8-5, with Felipe Fonseca and Mark Gellard defeating the CSU team of Babar Akbar and Lee Schuttle.

Guichard defeated Meyer, 6-4, 6-4, at number one singles, while Jacobs defeated Mansell, 5-7, 7-5 (10-6) at number three singles. ECU's Baumer defeated De Lange, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) at number two, while Fonseca defeated Lephuthino, 6-3, 6-2, at number four.

Gellard got the best of Schuttle at number five, 7-6, 6-1, and Gerard Galindo defeated Akbar, 6-3, 6-1, at number six singles.

The match was the dual-match season opener for CSU.

ECU continues its weekend stay in Charleston with a Saturday morning (10 a.m.) match at College of Charleston.
